The president-elect of the prestigious debating society has been removed from his position after losing a vote of confidence that followed his disputed online comments about Charlie Kirk.

The vote against George Abaraonye reached the required two-thirds threshold to remove him from office, according to an statement from the organization.

Disputed Comments

The dispute erupted after Mr Abaraonye reportedly posted messages on social media that seemed to celebrate the death of the American conservative figure, who was shot dead while speaking at a college in the United States.

According to reports, one social media message reportedly stated "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an extended form of the phrase 'lol'.

The student leader is also said to have written in a messaging group with fellow students seeming to express approval of the event.

Election Results

The vote of confidence was conducted over the weekend, with outcomes revealed on Tuesday.

Official notices indicated that 1,228 ballots were cast supporting no confidence, while just over five hundred were opposed the motion.

The announcement confirmed that the president-elect was considered to have stepped down in accordance with the Oxford Union's rules.

Procedural Disputes

Voting operations were temporarily halted early on Monday after the returning officer was reportedly subjected to "interference, threats, and inappropriate behavior" from several representatives.

In a statement, Mr Abaraonye claimed that the count had been stopped because electoral officials believed "no legitimate and true result could be reached as a result of process errors".

His statement unequivocally denied that any person acting for George had engaged in threatening or obstructive conduct.

Ongoing Dispute

The president-elect maintained that significant concerns had been referred to the governing body and that he remained the elected leader.

His comment added that George was "grateful and honored to have the backing of significantly more than half of students at Oxford" who voted to have a "safe election and resist attempts to subvert democracy".

Opponents have argued that any failure to remove him would "signal to the world that the society has chosen ideology over integrity".

External Responses

On Friday, Mikey McCoy read out an open letter to the Oxford Union on The Charlie Kirk Show podcast.

The message criticized the union of becoming a place where "presidents of the union publicly celebrate the assassination of a political opponent".

The statement indicated that if Mr Abaraonye were to remain in post, supporters would "personally contact every U.S. political figure who has ever graced the union's chamber and advise them against future participation".

The society had previously condemned Mr Abaraonye's remarks after Kirk's death and stated that complaints submitted about him had been referred for official review.

The student leader had been one of several students to discuss with the activist at the union in spring.
