{'I could have killed them' - Lawson faces close call with F1 safety personnel
Formula 1 competitor Liam Lawson disclosed he came dangerously close to a life-threatening collision during Sunday's F1 event in Mexico when two safety personnel crossed the track right in his path
The concerning event happened on the third rotation when safety workers were spotted on the racing surface as Lawson was getting back on the race following an early pitstop to change his broken nose section
Competitor's Live Reaction
Shortly afterward, Racing Bulls driver Lawson radioed to his pit wall engineer saying: "Is this for real? Could you believe what happened? I might have... taken their lives"
"I genuinely couldn't process what I was witnessing"
"I exited on a new set of hards, and then I got to Turn One and unexpectedly appeared two guys sprinting across the track"
"I almost collided with one of them, honestly, it was incredibly risky"
Security Issues Highlighted
"Obviously there's been a failure in communication somehow but This is the first time I've faced that before, and I can't recall observing that in the past. It's completely unacceptable"
"We fail to grasp how on a live track marshals can be authorized to just sprint across the track in that manner. I don't understand the reason, I'm certain we'll get some kind of clarification, but this absolutely cannot recur"
Governing Body Reviewing
The sport's regulatory authority, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), is thoroughly reviewing the circumstances
"Following a turn one incident, track officials was informed that debris was present on the track at the apex of that corner" declared the regulatory authority
"In the third rotation, safety personnel were notified and placed on standby to go onto the racing surface and clear the fragments once all cars had passed"
"The moment it was realized that Lawson had pitted, the directives to deploy personnel were rescinded and a double yellow flag was displayed in that zone"
"The examination is ongoing what occurred after that point"
