British authorities has included an additional eleven further destinations to its official warning roster regarding the threats of methanol contamination from contaminated alcoholic drinks.

This expanded advisory now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following reports of "a global increase in the number of documented incidents" of methanol poisoning.

Only recently, the government had earlier added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current list, after a number of serious events including the deadly death of half a dozen travelers in Laos in 2024.

Travellers are being cautions that as little as tiny quantities of methanol can result in blindness or fatality within 12–48 hrs.

What is Toxic Alcohol and In what way is it Utilized?

Toxic alcohol is a poisonous substance often employed in antifreeze, car cleaning liquid, and paint thinner. This chemical is not intended for human consumption.

While it is inherently formed during the manufacture of alcoholic drinks, commercial firms lower it to minimal, harmless amounts for drinking through the distillation process.

Yet in various destinations, it is surreptitiously added into spirits to cut costs, and because it is tasteless and scentless, it is very difficult to identify.

Authorities' Guidance for Travellers

Foreign Office representative Hamish Falconer stated that every traveler should know the indicators of industrial alcohol toxicity.

"While consuming alcohol abroad, opt for reputable establishments and refrain from homemade alcohol or unspecified beverages," the official said.

"If something appears suspicious, like a fatigue that's much more severe than usual or sight issues – get medical help immediately."

The full roster of nations identified as posing a risk of industrial alcohol toxicity now includes: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
